What is Sheet Metal Fabrication?
Types of Sheet Metal Fabrication
Laser Cutting
Laser cutting involves etching materials, or cutting etching materials with a focused beam of a laser to create precise edges and complex patterns to the specifications of the designer through vaporization or melting.
Punching
Punching is a metalworking technique that uses a punch press to punch holes, notch or otherwise shape metal sheets. It is an affordable method of producing parts of high precision and can be used in repetitive production.
Bending
Metal bending refers to the act of bending the metal through a press brake or roller to the shape or angle required. This technique is best used in making parts that have sharp, angular bends and is needed in those industries in which precise angles are necessary.

Frequently asked questions
What file formats do you accept for sheet metal fabrication?
We accept STEP, DXF, DWG, IGES, and SolidWorks part files for sheet metal fabrication. For bent parts, we require either a 3D CAD model with bend parameters or a flat pattern drawing with bend lines, bend angles, and material specification. Our engineering team can generate a flat pattern from your 3D model if required.
What is the minimum material thickness you can fabricate?
We fabricate sheet metal from 0.5mm thickness for aluminum and stainless steel, and from 0.8mm for mild steel. Minimum thickness is determined by the material’s formability and the feature sizes required by your drawing. Thinner materials are subject to greater distortion during cutting and forming, which our engineering team considers during the DFM review.
Can you weld assembled sheet metal parts?
Yes. Top Proto performs MIG, TIG, and spot welding on fabricated sheet metal assemblies. Weld specifications including joint type, weld size, and inspection requirements should be noted on your drawing. Weld quality is inspected visually against AWS D1.1 or your specified standard before shipment.
What surface treatments are available for sheet metal parts?
We offer powder coating, anodizing for aluminum, zinc plating, brushed finish, passivation for stainless steel, e-coating, and painting. The appropriate treatment depends on your material, operating environment, and appearance requirements. Surface treatment specifications should be included on your drawing or noted in your order.
How do you handle tight tolerances on formed sheet metal parts?
Bend tolerances are held to +/-0.5 degrees on angle and +/-0.2mm on flange length as standard. For parts requiring tighter tolerances, we apply secondary coining or restrike operations to improve angular accuracy. Feature tolerances tighter than our standard capability are reviewed during the DFM process and confirmed before production begins.
