What is CNC Machining?

CNC machining is a subtractive manufacturing process. Computer-controlled cutting tools remove material from a solid workpiece, following a toolpath derived from your CAD file. The result is a finished component that reproduces your geometry precisely — feature to feature, part to part.

TOP PROTO runs CNC milling, CNC turning, and simultaneous 5-axis machining in one facility. We machine aluminium, stainless steel, titanium, brass, copper, tool steel, and engineering plastics — from a single prototype to low-volume batches of 500 parts.

Every order includes a DFM review before production starts and a dimensional inspection report before shipment.

Why Engineers Choose TOP PROTO for CNC Machining

Direct Manufacturer — One Facility Your parts are produced in our own Shenzhen facility by our own engineers. No third-party shops, no broker layer, no inconsistency between what was quoted and what gets made.

DFM Review Before Every Quote Wall thickness, internal radii, undercut access, tolerance feasibility — checked before we price the job. Problems flagged upfront cost nothing to fix. Problems found after machining cost time and money.

Inspection Documentation on Every Order Standard tolerance is ±0.01mm. Precision features to ±0.005mm. Every shipment includes a full dimensional inspection report, material certifications traceable to heat number, and a Certificate of Conformance.

Four Quality Certifications ISO 9001:2015, ISO 13485, IATF 16949:2016, and AS9100D certified. Annual third-party surveillance audits. ITAR registration available for controlled programmes.

Manufacturing Processes, All In-House

As Machined
Visible tool marks. Ra 3.2µm standard. Most economical option — used where surface appearance is not a requirement.
Bead Blasting
Uniform matte or satin texture. Removes tool marks and gives a clean, consistent appearance. Ra 3.2–6.3µm.
Brushed Finish
Unidirectional grain from grit polishing. Ra 0.8–1.6µm. Standard for decorative panels and instrument-grade aluminium parts.
Anodizing (Type II)
5–25µm oxide layer on aluminium. Corrosion resistance and colour options including clear, black, blue, red, and gold.
Black Oxide
Chemical conversion on steel and stainless steel. Mild corrosion resistance. <1µm — no dimensional change.
Gold Anodized
Provides a hard, wear-resistant layer with a premium golden aesthetic. Popular for aerospace components
Clear Anodized
Protective oxide layer that maintains the natural silver look of aluminum while improving durability.
Mirror Polish
Highest polish level. Reflective surface for optical and decorative applications. Ra 0.4–0.8µm achievable.

Prototype CNC Machining

Same Materials, Same Tolerances — Prototype parts run on the same machines, to the same specs, as your production design. No substitute materials or relaxed tolerances.

DFM Included — Design issues caught before cutting. Wall thickness, radii, feature access — flagged with specific notes before you spend anything on machining.

Fast Lead Times — Standard CNC aluminium parts from 3 days. Titanium and stainless from 5 days. Confirmed at quoting.

Low-Volume Production

First Article Inspection — Production baseline established against your drawing. Every subsequent batch held to it.

Batch Documentation — Dimensional report, material certifications, and CoC on every production batch — not just the first article.

Consistent Lead Times — Production orders go into our forward schedule. You receive a confirmed ship date, not an estimate.

Frequently asked questions

We mill a broad range of metals and engineering plastics. Metals include aluminium 6061 and 7075, stainless steel 304 and 316L, titanium Grade 5, brass C360, copper C101, and tool steels A2, D2, and H13. Engineering plastics include PEEK, polycarbonate, POM (Delrin), nylon PA6 and PA66, ABS, PTFE, PMMA, HDPE, and Ultem. Material is verified against certification before production begins.

Standard CNC machining tolerance is ±0.01mm (ISO 2768-m). Where your drawing requires tighter features, we achieve ±0.005mm on precision work and ±0.003mm on 5-axis critical features. Tolerances are confirmed at quoting — not assumed. Every part is measured against your specified tolerances before shipment, and a dimensional inspection report is included with every order.
Prototype parts run on the same machines, in the same materials, to the same tolerances as your production design. We review your CAD file for manufacturability before quoting — catching wall thickness, radii, undercut access, and tolerance feasibility issues before cutting starts. You receive a dimensional inspection report with every prototype order, so your test data reflects production-representative parts.
TOP PROTO machines parts for aerospace (AS9100D), automotive (IATF 16949:2016), medical devices (ISO 13485), robotics, electronics, semiconductor, communication, new energy, and consumer product applications. Each sector has specific tolerance, certification, and documentation requirements — our team applies the right process controls for your application before production begins.
STEP files are preferred for CNC machining — they retain full 3D geometry and all feature references. We also accept IGES, SolidWorks (.sldprt), CATIA (.CATPart), Parasolid (.x_t), STL, DXF, and DWG. PDF engineering drawings are accepted alongside CAD files and are treated as the authoritative tolerance source where dimensions are called out.
No minimum. TOP PROTO accepts single-part prototype orders through to low-volume batches of 500 parts. Order quantity does not change the material standard, inspection method, or documentation — a single prototype ships with the same dimensional inspection report as a 100-part batch.
CNC machining cost depends on geometry complexity, material, tolerance requirements, finish, and quantity. Upload your STEP file for an instant price on standard geometries — or within 24 hours for complex parts. DFM feedback is included in the quote at no additional cost.
Xometry is a marketplace that routes orders to third-party shops — quality and lead time depend on which shop picks up your job. TOP PROTO is a direct manufacturer: one facility, one team, one accountable quality system. Protolabs focuses on US and European customers at premium pricing. TOP PROTO machines from Dongguan at competitive direct-manufacturer pricing, with the same tolerance capability (±0.005mm) and a full DFM review on every quote.
